WHAT WE DO

IMRO Foundation is focusing on water and smart cities/sustainable development. Our projects aim to promote global sustainability. By shaping the approach, we can directly help people to community and urban development, with focus on education, water treatment, sustainability and environmental protection. Our operation is transparent – by sharing information we contribute to the development of other organizations. In this spirit, within the European Climate Alliance we started to cooperate with the Municipality of Zoersel (Belgium) in 2017 to support the Municipality of Bohicon in South Benin so that the municipal leadership could ensure more sustainable, ecological and resilient urban services to the 160.000 local resident. In the meanwhile, IMRO Foundation has established also a vital cooperation with a Senegalese youth association (GNO FAR) to foster environmentally conscious awareness and lifestyle in its hometown, Zigiunchor with nearly 340.000 inhabitants. Our greatest endeavour is to ensure green solutions in these urban areas so that we can ease the burdens of environmental and humanitarian challenges in Benin and Senegal.

IMRO’s experience guarantees development which meets the needs of the present without compromising the future generations. Smart urban and community development, strategy-building, policy analysis all support the strategy creation for a better future. The solution includes smart methods, design and technology.

Smart
infrastructure

We also promote intelligent water treatment technologies supplied by our partners. These multifunctional modular systems provide highly purified water – an innovation for safe drinking water supply in areas without water infrastructure or even places with no electricity. The integrated container units can provide services to meet social communication and healthcare needs. These technologies have environmental and social benefits contributing to the solution of the water management challenges worldwide.

PROJECTS

Turning plastic waste into raw material for social housing Benin, West Africa

Communal waste handling is one of the greatest challenges in the cities of the Subsaharan region. In Benin, only about 7% of communal waste ends up in waste management facilities, while most of the non-degradable waste remains on the streets. Slum city areas have even been built on waste, like the coastal parts of Benin’s largest city, Cotonou. IMRO Foundation is looking into projects to significantly improve the quality of life of cities in Benin by implementing and promoting pilot solutions that could lead to significant progress and change of attitude in the management of communal waste.

Our project focuses on supporting our partner municipality, Bohicon (South Benin), to turn plastic waste into social housing and/or plastic pavement by collecting, shredding and compressing PET bottles, creating pellet bricks and than build affordable houses or pavement for low-income families and communities in need. For this aim, we are determined to install a shredder equipment in Bohicon so that the local waste management company can start to adequately treat at least a smaller portion of the daily 20 tons of communal plastic waste produced by. We believe that this initiative, as a good example, can help our partners to establish a more suitable urban lifestyle and a more resilient atmosphere in Bohicon.

Artesian wells for clean drinking water in Benin, West Africa

According to UNICEF data, about 30 percent of Benin households in cities and 40% in rural areas has no access to clean drinking water. Water is sourced from groundwater basin but in most cases its quality of drinking water is inadequate or the supply is disrupted due to cleaning deficiencies.
IMRO Foundation aims to provide clean water to the surface water reservoirs from groundwater (from about 60-100 m deep) using the technology of artesian wells, each source providing clean drinking water for about 250 people.

Our pilot project aims to provide such wells in public squares in Bohicon (South Benin) supporting our partner municipality to increase the water supply of its 160.000 inhabitants.

HOW WE WORK

Water. A unique and limited resource. The driving force of all nature. It is essential for all aspects of life, yet we fail to realise that we take something for granted – we turn the tap and have water running. One in 10 people in the world still doesn’t. That’s 663 million people! More than 2 billion people (1/3 of the global population!) lack access to a basic sanitation system. And in Africa, more people have access to a mobile phone (93%) than to piped water (63%). This needs to change.

To ensure prosperity we need action for people and the planet. We need sustainable coexistence with our environment. At IMRO Foundation, our aim is to help people contribute to the resolution of problems related to the lack of clean water and smart development. We believe in capacity development. We develop projects that focus on mobility, education and smart economy. Urban planning and climate strategies are essential for sustainable development. We promote green lifestyle choices which are part of a healthy living. We use the knowledge-base of our parent company IMRO (link: imro.hu), that has 10 years experience and 100s of successful projects in Central and Eastern Europe. We don’t give fish. We teach how to catch them.

WHO WE ARE

IMRO Foundation is a non-profit organisation bringing water, education and urban development to people in different countries since 2009. Our projects aim to promote global sustainability. By shaping our approach, we can help people to achieve community and urban development, primary education, water management and environmental protection. We focus on tailormade local solutions that can be distributed elsewhere, improving the quality of life for people and communities around the world.
